Seeking Advice for the Habitat

Chuck and I are having our cabinets refaced soon.  (Hey, someone has to stimulate the economy.)  We'd like to paint the walls to contrast with the new white cabinets and have picked out a yellow.  We like the yellow in this room (Bicycle Yellow), but I'm concerned that it might be too much.

I like the color but think maybe we should go a shade lighter, like Pale Daffodil. What do you think?

And as a follow-up to Gretchen's comment, there are not that many big walls. The biggest is approximately 10 feet by 3 feet. Everything else is areas between cabinets and small spaces.

  1. ok, how large are the swaths of yellow going to be? Are we talking about two full walls, or it this kind of an in-between cabinets and windows kind of thing? The more space your coving the more intense it will be. (duh).

That being said, I'm always a fan of darker, more saturated colors. i think it's bolder and way more fun. So I vote for bicycle yellow. (plus you can always repaint if you hate it)

  2. umm, that's tough. if it were large wall spaces, i'd probably opt for the daffodil color. however, since it's not, bicycle would probably be just fine.

they are both great colors. but if you're worried about bicycle being too bright, just go with daffodil. it's definitely not too dull.

  3. As one who has a yellow kitchen I feel I can give some tested advice here. From the way you have decorated the rest of your house, I think that the bolder yellow will be too much for you. I originally picked a bold yellow and HATED it when it got on the walls. We went and tried a few different shades before finding the right one. Yellow can be very dominating, so you have to be careful and be sure you know what kind of look you are going for. If bold is what you want, than go for the brighter. My biggest piece of advice would be to go buy the smallest can of the colors you are deciding between and paint sample sections on the wall. It may cost you a few extra bucks to start, but is sooooo much better than having to repaint your entire kitchen (especially if you hate to paint like I do). If you want to check out my kitchen yellow you can go to the following link on my blog.

Good luck! I can't wait to see it done.

  4. P.S. If you happen to like the color of my kitchen, I will run down stairs and get the color for you, so just let me know.

  6. Last fall, Al renovated our bedroom including painting. We opted for the family friendly fresh aire paint since I was pregnant and baby would soon arrive. We went with delightful daffodil and it looks great with white crown moulding and baseboards. We like it so much that I'm painting the boys' room the same color tomorrow.

I originally wanted something like bicycle yellow, but I'm glad Al chose a softer color.

  7. Yeah, it must be Jess:) She and I were in the same branch in South Jersey back in the day:) I love your blog! It has just the right kind of balance of serious, interesting, and hilarious that I am trying to create on my blog. I tend to err on the side of pointless and bizzare:) p.s.- I vote for the strong yellow. Life is too short. (disclaimer: I have no taste whatsoever)

  8. Wow! So many comments! I would say a lighter color, but maybe that's me. I would suggest getting a sample in both and seeing what you think. My mom went through about 20 choices when choosing the paint for the walls in the kitchen. But she doesn't want to paint the walls again! So I'd choose something I know I'd be happy with for a while.

  10. My favorite colors in a kitchen are yellow and green. Well, according to HGTV, neutral and tone down colors are always a good pick. They say that bolder colors make a room smaller. I do like the bicycle yellow, it might work. Personally, I would go with the Pale Daffodil just because I'm always too conservative with colors. I wish I could be a little more adventurous.
