Random Thoughts

Because Chuck bought an iPod touch for Christmas, I had to deal with this yesterday: Rhett playing with it at church. How do you feel about kids playing with technology during sacrament meeting? I'm still undecided. (You know, on the one hand, he's quiet and playing some game that's only different from the quiet book because it's electronic. But on the other hand, it's technology. And even though I know that scriptures come on the iPods, I think even adults look suspect when using them at church.)

As Rhett and I were driving home from church this is what he told me: "Mom, when we get home, I want to be a dead mouse." What the...?! Should I be worried?

I love avocado, but aside from eating it plain, what's your favorite way to use it? Note: A certain someone in my house will not eat guacamole. Just sayin'.

I didn't finish all of my "to do" projects for 2010. I guess it makes creating my "to do" projects list for 2011 easy. I did figure out how I want to finish my t-shirt quilt. Now I just need to find the energy to do so.

I could totally copy this vest and make a bunch of my own, right? (And I do mean for Rhett, not for me.) Would they have to be fancy or could I make them more a la this? And please don't ask what he's doing, because I just don't know.

  1. I'm also undecided about technology at church. When Marc uses his phone to look up scriptures or take notes, I feel uncomfortable next to him, like I'm watching a kid cheat at school. I know he's doing something right, but I think it looks bad and sets a bad example... I don't know! Rhett is a stud!

  2. One of our favorite ways to eat some avocado is in a salad - spinach, red grapes, avocado, feta cheese with blue cheese dressing (or any other favorite). We love this!

  3. I just say no to technology in church.

Outside of church is fine by me, but I don't see that anyone should have need of this distraction in church. I think technology is a much different distraction than a book or a piece of paper and a crayon. I find that whenever I'm staring at a computer screen, or an iPhone or whatever else it may be then I am totally sucked in. All of my senses are drawn into the device. But when I'm reading, looking at pictures, coloring, etc then I'm able to still hear talks and such that are going on around me. Sometimes, I even find the physical distractions helpful because I can 'tune in' better when my eyes aren't wandering all over the place and catching sight of something that makes my brain go on a tangent.

    Just my $0.02 :)

  4. I really don't like kids playing with ipods in church. In fact, I don't like books, snacks, or toys of any kind. Only because it doesn't work for us. My kids tend to be noisier because of all of it. They want someone elses crayon, book, or whatever. We got rid of all of it (except for a piece of gum after the sacrament) and my kids are fine in church without it all and much more reverent. Now if only I could get those who sit in front and back of us to do the same so my kids wouldn't lean over the bench to watch. Ugh.

I am okay with adults using their ipods for scripture reading. We have gotten pretty used to it during Sunday school and Priesthood/R.S. I just think in sacrament meeting things should be put away :)

  5. At first I was a little put off by the whole technology thing at church But this was back when people were using PDAs . I have since warmed up to the idea. Jason and I both have iphones and j has an ipad. We haven't brought a book to church in a while. With my big diaper bag full of crap, it makes it hard to bring along all of the books and manuals for church. I just find that it is easier to just have my phone. Plus it has my calendar in it so I can mark down things while at church. I still prefer to do my personal scriptures study from a hard copy, but find that the blessings of technology means a lighter diaper bag for me. Libby's only interest in my phone is as a teething ring at this point. I don't think that I'll let her use it during church. Jason will lose technology privileges at church the minute I ever see "doodle jump" during sacrament meeting:)

  6. i'm TOTALLY against this kind of technology at church. i'm also against cell phones at church, just not neccessary...ever. i could go on and on about these things but i won't.

i wouldn't worry too much about what rehtt said. kids say really random things they don't understand the meaning of. unless of course he keeps repeating it, then find the source and get rid of it.

oooooh i loves to put me some chilled avacado on these spicy black bean burgers i buy. i think they have chipolte in them so the avacado complements them well, so tasty!!

  7. i agree with angie and her tech. comments. but that's probably b/c we (ben and i) are just not into all those gadgets anyways. but, frankly, i think it looks worse (to me) to see an adult playing around with whatever gadget he/she has (even if it is to read scriptures) than for a child to be playing with one.

totally make some vests. then make some more. then send them my way. :)

as for avocados - my entire family loves to eat them. . . just plain. :) go figure, huh?

  8. avocado's with cottage cheese and fresh tomatoes, guac IS a pleaser at my house, and um.......salads as mentioned....

tech at church, p has scrips on his, i don't, but even though i bring the LARGEST bag of "tricks" to church my phone is never in it.

i don't know......i'm all about "quiet" kids at church, even if it's not reverent, we just aren't THERE yet, maybe I'm bad, I don't know. our kids don't play on it now, not an option, because if it were, i'm sure they'd just fight over it too! one less battle, for us. you have ONE though, so i don't know, could be a perk now!!! good luck. i pass no judgment, do whatever you want.....aren't we all trying to be the BEST we can be anyway???? ;)
